What makes us different from other theaters?

The short answer: Our style of production -Cinematic live theater! Cinematic live theater is a hybrid performance style that integrates cinematic techniques—such as live video feeds, digital projections, cinematic lighting, and rapid scene transitions—directly into a live stage performance. This approach creates a continuous, high-energy narrative where the stage space is constantly alive with action, bridging the gap between theater’s immediate, raw emotion and film’s visual language.

While cinematic live theater has a appeal for everyone, this style is significantly more appealing to new and younger audiences. Research indicates that Gen Z and Millennials are now attending theater more frequently than older demographics, driven by a desire for immersive and tech-forward experiences. Studies also show that performances incorporating digital elements lead to 67% greater emotional involvement. The blend of live risk and cinematic precision creates a heightened sense of presence that traditional plays may lack for first-time viewers.

Cinematic live theater is arguably one of the most effective ways to modernize traditional plays, as it solves the "distance" problem—both physical and emotional—that new audiences often feel with classics like Shakespeare or Greek tragedies. So whatever upcoming productions may be, re-imagined classics or new works, rest assure that Babel Box Theater will make it exciting by combining the unpredictable tension of a live event with the high-impact visuals of a movie, creating a unique "electric" atmosphere.

KASSANDRA

What's it all about

Kassandra is a multi-award winning play by internationally acclaimed Franco-Uruguayan playwright Sergio Blanco. It is about a woman “in transit”, performed in broken English by a protagonist who is simultaneously the Cassandra of ancient Greek tragedy and a transsexual immigrant prostitute in any city of the 21st century –an exile in her own body, a stranger in every country.

Director Dante Larzabal, a Clevelander who is a native of Uruguay, acquired the rights for an American premiere of the play. Babel Box Theater is producing and will begin a tour of the show at The Darl Center for the Arts in April 2026, and then moving to other community centers and colleges in the area. Production designer and videographer John Rivera-Resto (Muralmaster Studio) designed a stage setup that can travel and be erected on all locations.

The “simple” staging is a highly technical setup of cinematic live theater that combines a minimun of set pieces with rear projected scenes and tableaus to expand and flesh out the immersive narrative. These elements are filmed in advance with a dozen actors recreating heroic characters from 3,000 years in the past. Ultimately, Kassandra is an ironic one-person performance -supported by a cast of thousands, full of visuals, sound and music, funny but deeply touching, that talks about the sad reality of an underrepresented segment of society through myth.
